On 6 July 2025, I stood on stage at Dr. Virendra Swarup Institute of Computer Studies (VSICS), Kanpur, and gave the BCA Induction Seminar to 100+ incoming students. A few semesters earlier I'd been the confused kid whose first project, Living Space Automation, failed hard. The roadmap I shared came directly from what I wish someone had told me then.

Year 1 — Foundation & curiosity

  • Code smart: Python, C, Java.
  • Use AI tools deliberately: ChatGPT, Gemini, and whatever the current frontier model is.
  • Build fast, fail faster, learn loud.
  • Discover your career blueprint early — don't wait for final year to decide what you're good at.

Year 2 — Execution & visibility

  • Hackathons are testing grounds, not resume filler.
  • Internships are growth labs, even unpaid ones early on.
  • LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram are your resume now, whether you've decided to use them that way or not.
  • GitHub is digital credibility — an empty profile says something too.

Year 3 — Decisions & direction

Startup path: build an MVP, form a team. NIMCET or MCA prep: go all in, don't split focus. Placement prep: skills plus proof, not just a certificate list. And whichever path you pick — mentor juniors. It completes the circle.

The advice that landed hardest

Create more than you consume. Post before it's perfect. Show your process, not just your successes. Connections matter more than marks. To every fresher: start small, start scared, but start — this isn't just college, it's your career launchpad.
