AI content is only as good as what grounds it.

Generative models produce new text by sampling from patterns they learned, so the output is novel in form and derivative in substance. Used on your own material, with facts supplied and checked, it is a strong drafting and editing tool. Used to invent content from nothing, it produces fluent filler that readers and search engines increasingly discount. I run a content pipeline on exactly that distinction.

Questions students ask

The AI content questions searched most, answered from running a grounded publishing engine.

How does generative AI generate new content?

A language model predicts the next token given everything before it, repeatedly, sampling from a probability distribution learned from vast amounts of text. The prompt steers which continuations are likely. Because the sampling is probabilistic and the prompt is new, the output is a new sequence that did not exist before, assembled from patterns that did. Image models work by iteratively removing noise towards a description. The practical consequence: the model is excellent at form, structure and style, and has no independent access to facts beyond what it memorised during training or what you put in the prompt, which is why grounding matters for anything factual.

Can generative AI create new content?

Yes, in the sense that matters for most work: the sentences, images and code it produces are not copies of training data and did not exist before. No, in the sense some people mean: it does not have experiences, opinions or discoveries of its own, so content that depends on those, a personal story, a new finding, an informed judgement, must come from a person and be given to the model. The strongest use is therefore collaborative: you supply the substance (notes, data, a point of view, the facts), the model supplies drafting speed and structure, and you edit for truth and voice.

Does AI generate original content?

Original in form, not in insight. The text is new; the ideas are recombinations of what the model learned and what you provided. Left to itself, a model produces the average of the internet on a topic, which is why unprompted AI articles read alike. Originality enters through the human: a real experience, specific data, a contrarian position, a worked example from your own project. Give the model those and ask it to draft, and the result can be original because the input was. That is also why my content pipeline starts from a corpus of my own material rather than from a blank prompt.

Why AI generated content is bad

  • It invents facts, citations and quotes with confidence; unchecked, it publishes errors under your name.
  • It is generic: the same structures, the same hedges, the same phrases across millions of pages.
  • It has no voice unless you give it one, and readers notice.
  • It floods platforms, making useful content harder to find and lowering trust in everything.
  • It can reproduce bias and errors from training data at scale.
  • Each of these is a failure of use, not of the tool: grounding, editing and judgement fix them, and content produced without them deserves the reputation it has.

How much AI generated content is acceptable?

Judge by outcome rather than percentage. Search engines and platforms state that they rank content by usefulness and originality regardless of how it was produced, and penalise content made at scale primarily to manipulate rankings. Readers judge by whether it helped them and whether it sounds like a person who knows. So the acceptable amount is whatever portion leaves the work accurate, specific, useful and in your voice: often most of the drafting, little of the substance, none of the facts unchecked. Disclose where it matters, in academic, journalistic and professional contexts, and never present AI-invented experience as your own.

Does AI generated content rank in Google?

It can, and plenty does, when it is useful; search guidance is explicit that the method of production is not the ranking factor, helpfulness is. Pages that are thin, generic or produced in bulk to target keywords perform poorly and can be demoted, whether a person or a model wrote them. What ranks is content that answers a real question specifically, shows experience and expertise, is structured clearly, and is on a site with a track record. AI assistants that cite sources follow similar signals. The answer pages on this site were written with AI assistance from real question data and my own project experience, and they are judged by the same rule as any other page.

Can generative AI edit website content?

Yes, and editing is one of its best uses: tightening prose, fixing grammar, adjusting tone, restructuring for clarity, generating variants for testing, and updating many pages consistently. With tools, it can also apply edits directly: an agent connected to a site's content system can revise pages under review. The site you are reading is managed that way, through an MCP server with scoped permissions, so an assistant can draft, update and publish pages while a person approves anything public. The guardrails matter: a human gate before publishing, a log of changes, and no invented facts in edits.

How to stop an AI blog pipeline from making things up

Ground every draft in source material you control and instruct the model to use only that material: your notes, your project write-ups, your data, your earlier posts. Keep a list of allowed facts and claims; anything outside it is flagged. Require citations to the sources in the draft, and verify them mechanically where possible. Ban invented statistics, quotes and names in the prompt and check for them in a validation step. Put a person between the draft and publication, every time. My brand-engine pipeline works this way: it drafts from an exported corpus of my own material, validates against rules, and queues posts behind a manual gate before anything goes out.

How I run my content tooling on a local model for $0

The drafting and editing stages of a content pipeline do not need a frontier model. An open model through Ollama on an ordinary machine can draft from notes, rewrite for length and tone, generate titles and summaries, and check drafts against a rules list, at no per-token cost and with nothing leaving the machine. The pattern: a folder of source material, a script that assembles a prompt from the relevant pieces, a local model for the draft, a validation step with rules, and a review queue. Reserve a hosted model for the few steps where quality visibly differs. Cost drops to the electricity, and privacy improves.

How is LLM generated content moderated?

At three layers. The model provider trains and filters the model to refuse harmful outputs and runs classifiers on inputs and outputs. The platform you publish on applies its own policies, sometimes with AI detection and labelling of synthetic media, and ranks or removes content that is spammy, deceptive or harmful. And the responsible publisher moderates their own pipeline: rules about what may be claimed, validation of facts, a human review before release, and disclosure where appropriate. Detection of AI text is unreliable, so platform moderation increasingly judges the content's behaviour and usefulness rather than its origin, which puts the responsibility back on the publisher.

A grounded content pipeline

How the brand-engine behind my posts works.

  1. 01

    Source corpus

My own exports, write-ups and project notes; nothing drafted from a blank prompt.

  2. 02

    Rules and validation

Allowed facts, banned claims, required citations; a script checks every draft.

  3. 03

    Human gate

A review queue; nothing publishes without a person approving it.

  4. 04

    Schedule and log

Posts go out in fixed windows through platform APIs, with a log of what, where and when.
