India has a hackathon for every stage of a student.

Smart India Hackathon is the national programme where student teams solve problem statements from ministries and companies through college selection and a multi-day grand finale. Around it sit thousands of college, corporate and online hackathons listed on platforms such as Unstop and Devfolio. I competed in and now judge events across this range; the way in is the same at every level.

Questions students ask

The Smart India Hackathon and Indian hackathon questions searched most, answered plainly.

What is Smart India Hackathon?

Smart India Hackathon is a nationwide programme, run by the Ministry of Education's innovation cell with AICTE and partner organisations, in which student teams build solutions to real problem statements submitted by government ministries, departments, public bodies and companies. It has software and hardware editions, a long timeline from registration through college-level selection to a grand finale where shortlisted teams build and present over several days at nodal centres, and prizes for winning teams per problem statement. It is the largest student hackathon in the country and the one most Indian colleges organise around.

Who can participate in Smart India Hackathon?

Students enrolled in recognised institutions in India, forming teams through their college: typically six members from the same institute, with at least one female member, and a faculty mentor. Colleges register on the official portal, run an internal hackathon, and nominate the selected teams for the national rounds. Eligibility details, team composition and age or year rules are published for each edition and have changed over time, so the official site is the reference. There is also a junior edition for school students run separately. Working professionals and non-students are not eligible for the main programme.

Is Smart India Hackathon only for students?

Yes, the main programme is for enrolled students, with a separate junior track for school pupils. Professionals, startups and others who want to work on similar public problem statements find them in other programmes: ministry and state-level innovation challenges, corporate open innovation hackathons, and events on the public platforms that are open to all. Faculty participate as mentors and evaluators rather than competitors. For a student, the student-only field is part of the value: the competition is peers, the evaluators are the problem owners, and the pathway from college selection to the finale is designed for you.

How long is Smart India Hackathon?

The whole cycle runs several months: registration and problem statement publication, internal college hackathons, shortlisting, and then the grand finale, which is a multi-day continuous build and evaluation, historically thirty-six hours of hacking in the software edition and longer, days, in the hardware edition, held at nodal centres across the country. Exact durations and dates are set per edition and announced on the official site; recent editions have run the finale in December with registration earlier in the second half of the year. Plan for the long timeline rather than for one weekend.

When is Smart India Hackathon 2026?

Dates for each edition are announced on the official Smart India Hackathon website and through colleges' points of contact; recent editions have opened registration and problem statements in the second half of the year, with internal college rounds in the following weeks and the grand finale towards the year end. Treat any date on a third-party site as unconfirmed until the official site shows it. The practical advice is to prepare before the announcement: form a team of six with complementary skills and a mentor, study past problem statements from the organisations you are interested in, and build a small prototype in that domain so the internal round is easy.

What happens in Smart India Hackathon?

  • Problem statements are published by ministries, public bodies and companies, each with a description and expected outcome.
  • Colleges run internal hackathons; teams pick statements and pitch ideas; the college nominates the best.
  • Nominated teams submit idea documents and presentations; organisers shortlist for the finale.
  • At the finale, teams build continuously at a nodal centre with mentors and periodic evaluations by the problem owners.
  • Final presentations and demos; winners chosen per problem statement; prizes and sometimes deployment opportunities follow.
  • Throughout, the evaluators are the people who wrote the problem, which changes what wins: feasibility and fit over flash.

How to crack Smart India Hackathon

Choose the problem statement like a client brief: read it several times, identify the real user and the constraints (field conditions, languages, devices, data access), and look up the organisation's past statements and winners. Form the team for the statement, not the other way round, with domain research as an explicit role. In the internal round, present feasibility and impact in the evaluators' terms. Before the finale, build a working prototype on realistic data; at the finale, refine, measure and prepare for evaluator questions about deployment. Teams that treat the problem owner as the customer and show something that could actually be used are the ones I have seen advance. The guide on my site goes stage by stage.

How to host hackathon on Unstop

Unstop lets organisers, colleges, companies and communities create an event page with the format, rules, timeline, prizes and registration form, manage registrations and teams, run submission rounds, and reach its large student audience. The process is to create an organiser account, set up the opportunity with its rounds (registration, idea submission, build, finals), define team size and eligibility, add judging criteria and prizes, and publish; the platform handles registrations and communication. Similar platforms include Devfolio and HackerEarth. Whatever the platform, the quality of the event comes from the problem statements, the mentors and the judging, which the platform does not supply.

How to join online hackathon

Browse the platforms, Unstop, Devfolio, HackerEarth, Devpost and community sites, filter for open events and beginner-friendly tags, read the rules and the submission format, and register before the deadline, alone or with a team; most platforms have team-finding channels. Join the event's chat server, where announcements, mentor hours and team matching happen. Build with a shared repository and a video call, record the demo video early, and submit with margin. Online events are the easiest first step for a student anywhere in India, because nothing depends on your college or city.

When hackathon started in India

Hackathons appeared in Indian colleges and startups in the early 2010s, following the global developer-event wave and the growth of startup communities in the major cities, with corporate and college events multiplying through the middle of the decade. Smart India Hackathon, launched in 2017, made the format national and gave colleges a reason to run their own selection events, which is when hackathons became a routine part of student life across the country. Today the ecosystem spans school, college, corporate, government and online events, and a student can find one most weeks of the year.
